Household germs and where to find them

Sponges and doorknobs often receive a bad rap for holding household germs, but there are countless other areas in Australian homes which are breeding grounds for bacteria.

According to the experts at House Call Doctor, common nasties found include salmonella, e. Coli, staphylococcus, yeast, and mould, which can lead to diarrhoea, vomiting, and respiratory issues.

Chopping board

Research out of the University of Arizona suggests there can be up to 200 times more faecal bacteria on the average chopping board than the average household toilet seat.

Diseases associated with these bacteria can easily be prevented by running chopping boards through an intensive dishwasher cycle and microwaving for 30 seconds once clean.

Tea towels

Tea towels, especially those which are used to dry dishes, should be replaced after ever use.

The porous nature of tea towels means they hang on to food and bacteria, which multiply when the tea towel is wet and go straight back onto our dishes.

Once used, tea towels can be washed in the washing machine and hung in the sun.

Refrigerator

Refrigerator shelves are breeding grounds for bacteria – food which must be kept cold such as raw meat and milk are often spilled and ignored.

While bacteria can be slower to thrive in the cold temperatures, research suggests a proximity to foods which are not cooked, for example cured meats and leftover dinners, presents a risk of illness.

Perishable foods should be kept tightly sealed and kept away from ready-to-eat foods, and spills should be cleaned immediately.

Reusable bags

Like a fridge, reusable shopping bags are in constant contact with food and should be cleaned between uses.

This is particularly important to remember as plastic bags continue to be banned across Australia. Reusable bags can be thrown into the washing machine and cleaned as if they are regular clothes.

Computer keyboard

Kitchens and bathrooms aren’t the only rooms in the house where germs can thrive.

As computer keyboards are often shared by multiple family members and even guests, they can be highly susceptible to dirt and germs.

Keyboards should be cleaned weekly with disinfectant, and food should be kept away where possible.
